"Everyone at Sunrise is proud of our 30 years of helping adults experiencing memory loss and supporting their loved ones"

Sunrise Senior Living announced today that on Wednesday, September 21, 2011, World Alzheimer's Day, more than 250 Sunrise communities in North America will host Resources to Remember events aimed at educating and supporting those who care for seniors with Alzheimer's disease or other forms of memory loss.

"Everyone at Sunrise is proud of our 30 years of helping adults experiencing memory loss and supporting their loved ones," said Mark Ordan, chief executive officer for Sunrise. "Sunrise has always held a steady, central focus on providing sector leading memory care through a highly trained and caring team. We are pleased to share all we can with caregivers to help them enjoy full relationships with their loved ones."

Among the resources that will be shared at each community event are:

  • A Complimentary Caregiver Guide that provides helpful tips for communicating with a loved one who has memory loss.
  • A Caregiver Video that demonstrates Sunrise's approach to caring for those with memory loss, as well as testimonials from Sunrise team members and caregivers.
  • Open Discussion with local Sunrise team members who can help families understand and overcome the challenges they face as loved ones of those with memory loss.

"Understanding how to communicate effectively with people who have memory loss lets us validate their emotions and meet their basic needs for security, love and purpose," said Rita Altman, vice president of Memory Care Services for Sunrise. "Our Resources to Remember events not only provide an opportunity for caregivers to learn these communication techniques but also to share their experiences, support one another and raise awareness."

Sunrise serves more than 9,000 residents each day in its Reminiscence neighborhoods, specially designed for those with memory loss. The Sunrise approach begins with understanding the unique details of each resident's life to provide personalized care, while focusing on maintaining dignity and nurturing their mind, body and spirit. Communities have a life enrichment manager, who develops creative ways to engage residents in life skills based on their unique interests. The company provides a number of programs for residents who have various levels of memory loss including Terrace Club or Avon Place, for residents with early stages of memory impairment and Edna's Place, for residents who have more severe cognitive impairment.

In addition to supporting World Alzheimer's Day with events in its communities, Sunrise is also a Platinum Level national team for the Alzheimer's Association 2011 Walk to End Alzheimer's™. The company's goal is to raise more than $400,000 through local fundraisers at each community and its community support office in McLean, VA.
