Designing for Seniors

Designing for Seniors

The Sunrise Senior Living Tour of Homes is an annual week-long event where the public is invited to tour our communities, view resident suites, meet our dedicated team and take part in the Sunrise Signature Experience. This year's Tour of Homes event week takes place June 14-20.

As part of the Sunrise Signature Experience, our residents enjoy relationship-based care, nutritious and delicious food, a community dog and cat who offer comfort and companionship and hundreds of special touches throughout the community designed to meet the wellness needs of seniors.

A very deserving resident couple at Sunrise of Gahanna, OH, received an all-expense paid redesign of their suite in 2014. Watch the design process as it leads up to the big reveal where residents Helen and Dominic Raimondo were incredibly surprised at how their suite was beautifully transformed. See for yourself!
Add small potted plants to your living space as they quite literally add oxygen and life to any room! Worried about the maintenance of a live plant? Try a small silk plant for the same look without the upkeep.
As you get older, it naturally becomes harder to see. Try using contrasting colors, textures and patterns for your bedding, pillows and walls. Not only does it make it easier on aging eyes to see, but it also adds a pop of personality to any room!
Invest in furniture pieces that can not only hold a lot — but can also hide clutter when necessary! Look for pieces that mix open and closed storage for a more stylish look, such as a mini bar used in the 2014 Suite Style redesign.
When living in a smaller space, it's important that you can get more out of each piece of your furniture. Look for pieces that act in multiple ways, such as a storage ottoman that serves as both a container and extra seating!
Use easy-to-install remote controlled lighting to create the perfect ambiance for any room. Try installing wall sconces to create easily accessible and brighter light while reading in bed or softer lighting to create the sense of a warm and calming atmosphere.

Watch as Fran, a lucky Sunrise resident, receives a complete makeover of her suite to reflect her happy style. Fran shares her excitement for her beautiful new space.

Storage can be a huge challenge when downsizing. Check out these suggestions on how to choose your storage bins wisely.
