Katie Palamara, executive director of Sunrise of Arlington, was named a recipient of the Executive Director Award by the Massachusetts Assisted Living Association at the organization’s annual Excellence Awards Dinner on May 14.

The awards are presented each year to individuals at every level of assisted living who have demonstrated their desire to make a positive difference in the lives of residents and who, in the view of their peers, stand out as role models in the industry.

Palamara started her career in assisted living as a CNA caregiver, and she has risen through the ranks to become an executive director. Over the past year, Palamara has gone above and beyond, taking over as executive director of a sister community who recently lost their longtime leader to cancer. Palamara has been able to lead the team at Sunrise of Arlington during this difficult time. Her colleagues say that Palamara has “brought a calm sense of leadership into a community rebounding from the loss of a beloved leader. She has made a true difference because she always keeps it real, is boldly honest in whatever is being dealt with and has such a strong work ethic and can-do spirit.”

“We are honored to recognize the amazing employees, caregivers and volunteers who dedicate their time and energy to ensuring the highest quality of care for assisted living residents across the commonwealth,” said Brian Doherty, president and CEO of Mass-ALA. “In their commitment to treating all with dignity and respect, our 2019 award winners embody the values and high standard of care for which the assisted living industry is known.”

“Sunrise Senior Living is extremely proud of this well-deserved recognition. Katie is extremely committed to her residents and team members and we take great pride in promotion from within,” said Larry Steinhauser, senior regional director of operations at Sunrise Senior Living. “Katie’s rise from the front-line caregiver to community leader is worthy of this award and recognition.”

The Executive Director Award recognizes an executive director at a Mass-ALA provider member organization who enhances the residence by building and leading a strong and high performing team to provide the highest quality of services to residents. This individual excels at building relationships with stakeholders in the community and has created a positive and dynamic culture for employees, which has made a significant contribution to the residents’ quality of life.
