At Brighton Gardens of St. Charles we know the meaning of “community.” This was shown most recently in the way we reached out to the students of St. Charles East High School. The St. Charles community has experienced the tragic loss of three students in a two-week period. These events took the otherwise quiet suburb by surprise, shaking the community to its very core.

This tragic loss has been felt deeply and profoundly by the entire community. While the school has taken steps to support the students, we felt moved with compassion to do something for the school community, which has been a support to our residents.

We decided that purple carnations with white ribbons would be a real day-brightener for the students, and we purchased the flowers, tying ribbons to each. We also painted canvases in purple lettering with the words, “We Stand Strong with You,” loaded up a bus with nine residents and – in addition – took six team members to the high school during the students’ lunch hour. The residents displayed our sign and handed the carnations to students. We were so well-received, and we know by the response that the students really appreciated our gesture.

The connection was felt deeply, and interaction between the young students and senior residents was magical, proving that the generational divide is not very wide!
