Not Just Art, an enrichment center for kids located in Oyster Bay, recently launched a Music Together®Generations program, in which young children and seniors jointly participate in a music-themed class.

“In this special Music Together class we expand our circle to include ‘Grandfriends,’ seniors who live in an assisted living facility,” says program director Deirdre Savino. “We encourage the children to interact with the seniors. However, seniors can be involved in whatever way they feel comfortable, same with the children," Savino says.

Some of the features of this new class include “legacy songs” that appeal to the older generations, as well as certain accommodations that make it easier for the seniors to get involved. This mixed generations class provides a great social experience, Savino says, adding that this program is a great way to teach children not to fear aging and how to be more comfortable around older generations.

The Music Together Generations program takes place at the Sunrise of Dix Hills senior living facility in Suffolk County. Registration is currently open and all participants are invited to join at their own comfort level. The class is for newborns to 5-year-olds and the adults who love them, Savino says.

Not Just Art offers many additional classes including art, science, and an open studio class where children ages 3-12 can learn, play, and discover art in a free-form environment.
