STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- The sandwich generation sounds cute, but it doesn’t capture the stress that baby boomers feel, squeezed between the needs of their aging parents and the demands of their job and, in many cases, their children.

More than one-third of baby boomers — people born between 1946 and 1964 — are taking care of an aging parent, according to the AARP. The challenges of providing such care, including financial and medical concerns, coupled with working and family responsibilities can be daunting.

With that in mind, Staten Island University Hospital (SIUH) is hosting an educational program “Baby Boomers & Their Aging Parents” on May 14, from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the hospital’s Regina M. McGinn, MD Education Center, 475 Seaview Ave., Ocean Breeze.

The program aims to help provide answers and resources to meet the challenges faced by caregivers.

Featured speakers and their topics include: Dr. Donna Seminara, SIUH director of geriatric medicine on “Caring for the Caregiver”; Michele Sileo and Elura Nanos, owners of LawyerUp and stars of the reality TV show “SI Lawyers” on “Mom Always Like You Best — Mediation for the Caregiver Child”; Judith D. Grimaldi, elder law attorney with Grimaldi & Yung, on “Preparing for the Unknown,” and a representative from Sunrise Senior Living will speak about “The Experience: A Loved One’s Journey into Dementia.”

The seminar is free. Reserve a spot by calling Rosemarie Dressler at 718-226-2486.
