Sunrise Senior Living has announced a Chicago-area campaign to honor the service of veterans and to remind them of the government benefits they may be entitled to receive.

Events will be held at 20 Sunrise communities throughout the area on Thursday, Veterans Day.

"Too many veterans and their families are unaware that they may be entitled to substantial benefits that could help offset the cost of living in a senior assisted-living community," said Kelly Myers, senior vice president of sales for Sunrise, based in McLean, Va.

The most substantial benefit that many veterans are unaware of is for "Aid and Attendance." This benefit provides up to $2,000 per month for a veteran or a surviving spouse to pay for assistance with activities of daily living such as dressing, bathing or eating.

Many veterans who ordinarily would not qualify for a veterans pension because of their income may qualify for this benefit because medical expenses are deducted from the income calculation.

Veterans are invited to any Sunrise community Thursday to receive a special gift as a token of Sunrise's appreciation for their service, Myers said.

Information on veterans benefits also will be available at each event, so veterans and their families can learn more about what financial support options are available.

Sunrise assisted-living properties in the Chicago area are Sunrise of Lincoln Park, Sunrise of Wilmette, Sunrise of Park Ridge, Sunrise at Fountain Square in Lombard, Sunrise of Willowbrook, Sunrise of Highland Park, Sunrise of Palos Park, Church Creek in Arlington Heights, Sunrise of Glen Ellyn, Sunrise of Bloomingdale, Sunrise of Schaumburg, Brighton Gardens of Wheaton, Sunrise of Buffalo Grove, Sunrise of Naperville, Sunrise of Flossmoor, Sunrise of Naperville North, Sunrise of Barrington, Brighton Gardens of St. Charles, Sunrise of Gurnee and Sunrise of Crystal Lake.
