Christmas is a little bit merrier for the residents of Sunrise Senior Living this year after receiving gifts from members and staff at Afterburn Fitness.

“Seniors sometimes get overlooked,” said Nicole Coughlin, a trainer at Afterburn who helped organize and deliver the gifts.

Afterburn Fitness, with help from Priscilla Salon, set up “adopt-a-senior” trees with wishlists from Sunrise residents at the gym on Nov. 26, and collected donated gifts through Dec. 16. Gifts were delivered to Sunrise on Dec. 19. Igor Molchanov, senior executive director at Sunrise Assisted Living, said that the more than 120 residents at the facility all received a gift.

“Not one was missed,” Molchanov said.

“Most of the time, it’s usually the kids that receive gifts, so we wanted to do something a little different,” said Nikki Buencamino, assistant manager at Afterburn.

She said more names were added to the tree, but were gone within a few days.

“It was so touching,” Coughlin said.

Residents received their gifts from Sunrise team members dressed as Santa and Mrs. Claus on Dec. 23 at lunch, and the gifts ranged from fishing poles and footballs to a year’s supply of TV Guide in large print.

“I certainly didn’t expect anything like this!” said Eleanor Schiffer, a Sunrise resident who opened her gift on Dec. 23. Schiffer received a white knit sweater, and said the gifts were a “very good idea.”

Molchanov said that all of the residents were extremely happy with their gifts, and said Sunrise was “really grateful to partner with the community.”

“It was less about what the present was and more about the thoughtfulness of the gesture,” he said.
